Dartmouth Police Department
With the new school year upon us, the topic of social tolerance seemed like a worthwhile subject to explore. Hate crimes takes bullying to a new hurtful level. Part of the dangers of socially biased behavior lies in the fact that sometimes little is done to correct the conduct. In this diverse world, teenagers need to accept one another for their similarities as well as for their differences. While teenagers may easily accept different people of their own ethnicity, it may be difficult for them to accept others who aren’t. Teaching social tolerance to teenagers is necessary to make this world a better place. The following guidelines will help educators, parents and students recognize and identify social intolerance behavior, which will hopefully lead to discussion and reasonable action to prevent someone from becoming a victim.
Are people harassing you and making comments about you, simply because of your religion, your heritage or ethnicity or perhaps because of your nationality or sexuality? Are you afraid to go to school or work, because of the bullying you are subjected to because of your religion, ethnicity or sexuality? You have as much right to happiness as anyone else, and here’s how to deal with any form of bigotry.
If the harassment is at school or work, go to a teacher or a supervisor, and let them know what is going on. If necessary, file a police report.
Some ways you can help stop racial intolerance include:
Report it!
Attend diverse events.
Don’t tell or laugh at racially motivated jokes.
Speak up for someone that is being victimized.
The Dartmouth Police Department takes reports of Hate Crimes quite seriously and will not hesitate to pursue criminal charges against any individual where probable cause exists.
Remember, your voice is the most powerful tool that you possess.
My comment has nothing to do with bullying, but rather with the nightmare that has become Slocum Road in the morning. It took me 15 minutes to get into the school this morning, nearly making my daughter late. I was told that a new traffic pattern was established by the Dartmouth Police and it really doesn’t take much to see that it isn’t working. There are going to be some serious accidents occurring if something isn’t done to rectify the situation. I know that I cannot be the only parent who is beyond frustrated with this situation.
Why don’t you have your child ride the bus ? The school officials ask that we all use the buses. It would cut down on the traffic and your child would always arrive on time. Please consider it.
